Created for the Reflecting Pool at Lincoln Center, Naiad Metal is a contemporary Butoh solo by Vangeline that merges ancient myth with the architecture of the modern city. Emerging within water and reflection, the female body becomes both figure and landscape—soft and reflective, vulnerable and enduring. The work unfolds as a quiet, ritual encounter, transforming public space into a site of contemplation.

In Greek mythology, naiads are female water spirits bound to particular sites—figures of vigilance and protection whose presence is inseparable from place. Naiad Metal positions the performer as a site-bound presence within the iconic cultural landscape of Lincoln Center, where architecture, history, and the performing arts shape public imagination. Costumed in a billowing, reflective garment that spreads across the surface of the water like a floating nenuphar, and drawing on a core Butoh principle—the body as a well-polished mirror—the dancer functions as a reflective medium through which water, architecture, and light continuously reappear. In the heart of the city, Naiad Metal offers a brief glimpse of rhythms shaped by tides, sunrise, and sunset—harmonious cycles always present in the midst of an accelerating world.
