THE SLOWEST WAVE

+

Butoh workshop

Internationally acclaimed Butoh artist and educator Vangeline brings her signature workshop and solo performance to JetLAG-2025 — an immersive exploration of stillness, presence, and embodied expression.

Later, Vangeline returns to the stage with The Slowest Wave — a solo performance at the crossroads of dance and neuroscience. Rooted in the tradition of Japanese Butoh and shaped by decades of radical practice, her work is slow, exacting, and unflinchingly honest. As founder of the New York Butoh Institute, she merges somatic research, social practice, and ritual performance into a singular presence, inviting the audience into deep time — a shared stillness that expands movement and perception.

  1. In a visually captivating scene from The Slowest Wave, Vangeline and three other dancers lie on a dark, glossy stage, each raising one leg in the air in synchronized yet individualized gestures. Dressed in minimal white costuming, the performers are bathed in dramatic red and blue lighting that casts reflections on the floor and emphasizes the sculptural quality of their poses. Vangeline, positioned second from the left, extends her right leg at a diagonal as her upper body curves toward the floor. The moment captures the meditative pacing and surreal, wave-like stillness of the performance. Photo by Michael Blase.
