Vangeline draws on 23 years of experience as a Butoh teacher and performer, and over 35 years of dedication to the field of dance. She is the author of the critically acclaimed non-fiction book Butoh: Cradling Empty Space.

Her teaching blends traditional Butoh with current research on the nervous system, attention, and the subtle mechanics of movement. Through her work on The Slowest Wave—the first scientific study to measure the effects of Butoh on the brain—she has developed an approach that supports deeper awareness, groundedness, and gentle transformation. She is also developing an innovative system for mapping Butoh’s internal states to support students and future interdisciplinary research.

Vangeline is a 2018 NYFA/NYSCA Artist Fellow in Choreography and the winner of the 2015 Gibney Dance Beth Silverman-Yam Social Action Award. She is also the founder of the award-winning Dream a Dream Project, an 18-year initiative bringing Butoh to incarcerated individuals in correctional facilities across New York City.

A member of the International Association for Dance Medicine & Science, Vangeline teaches trauma-informed Butoh with an emphasis on safety, accessibility, and deep listening. All workshops are open level, and beginners are welcome.

Cancellations for all classes must be made 12 hours before the class start time. Students that do not attend the class will not receive any form of credit or exchange.
