ECOLOGICAL URBAN PILGRIMAGE FROM THE GARDENS TO THE RIVER on the Lower East Side of NYC

Earth Celebrations’ ECOLOGICAL CITY, a climate action, ecological urban pilgrimage and performance art event - features a spectacular 6 hour procession featuring visual art, giant puppets and costumes with 20 site performances of dance, music, theater and poetry celebrating sustainability solutions throughout the community gardens, neighborhood and East River Park waterfront on the Lower East Side of New York City.

Sindy Butz of Vangeline Theater will perform an 8-minute Butoh dance performance highlighting water, river, flooding, pollution and climate change (waterfront performance/ East River and 6th Street) at 4pm.

Sindy Butz is a Visual Artist, Butoh Dancer and Educator. She grew up in the suburbs of communist East Berlin, Germany and has started her dance education in Ballet, Dance Theater and Folk Dance at the age of 6 in the professional Children's Dance Theater Strausberg under Nora Jarchow-Dürrenfeld/ Palucca School. She has been performing since the age of 9. Butz holds a Bachelor's Degree in Visual Arts of the academy AKI Enschede (Netherlands) and a Master's Degree in Art Science, of the University of the Arts Berlin (Germany), with a focus on performance art, sculptural installation and contemporary ceramics.

In 2009, equipped with the DAAD research grant on assistive technology and wearable art for the Interactive Telecommunication Program at New York University, she moved to New York. Shortly after her arrival she started training dance with Vangeline. Butz has performed for Vangeline Theater in New York at the Brooklyn Museum, New Museum, Princeton University, Bronx Academy of Art and Dance, Dixon Place, and Asian American Art Alliance among others.

Since 2010, she has been a member of the New York Butoh Company Vangeline Theater, and joined the faculty of The New York Butoh Institute in 2016. Butz has trained and researched Butoh since 2009 with her main teacher Vangeline, as well as with Butoh Masters Tadashi Endo, Tetsuro Fukuhara and Katsura Kan (among others). In 2015, she became particularly interested in a combination of Butoh techniques, dance science and movement therapy. She started an intensive study with Dr. Martha Eddy and became a certified teacher in somatic movement BodyMind Dancing™ (2017), and is currently pursuing a two year Dynamic Embodiment - Somatic Movement Education and Therapy Training.

Recently, she concluded a mentorship with Maureen Fleming and became certified in the body and dance training system FlemingElastixx® with a focus on spine flexibility and breath work. Butz continues her research regarding dynamic embodiment, movement analysis, Somatic Butoh, one-to-one therapy, and Laban/ Bartenieff concepts. She currently teaches BodyMind Dancing classes at Movement Research and Studio 55C in the East Village.

Sindy Butz has also performed and exhibited solo projects nationally and internationally; her solo projects Hearth and Homage to Hildegard of Bingen have been featured by the Marina Abramovic Institute.
