The Vangeline Theater

The Vangeline Theater is a dance company firmly rooted in the tradition of Japanese Butoh while
carrying it into the 21st century. Our work fosters an appreciation of French, Japanese and European Culture through performances and workshops. We offer Butoh classes to performers and the regular public and strive to utilize Dance and various forms of artistic explorations as tools to heal our community, to bring dreams to the people and people back to their dreams.

The Vangeline Theater is a 501(c)3k company, and a company in residence with:

the Field (2009),
Galapagos Art Space (2004-present),
PS122 (2005) and at the Puffin Room(2007).

We received generous grants from The Puffin Foundation and The Japan Foundation in 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2008.

Venues and festivals where our works have been presented include:

Joyce SoHo, Chashama, the Kitchen, Abrons Arts Center, White Wave rising series, Dance Theater Workshop, Here Arts Center’s American Living Room, Galapagos Art Space, PS122 Performance Space, Theater for The New City, the New York Butoh festival, the Gates in Central Park, New York Cool Festival, the Clemente Soto Velez Cultural Center, Links Hall Chicago, the Howl Festival, the Puffin Room, Art in Odd Places, and the Lower East Side Festival for the Arts.


The Vangeline Theater reaches out to female members of the incarcerated population (“The Dream a Dream project: Movement workshop for incarcerated women”, New York, 2007, 2008).

Mission Statement:


To create, form and establish a Dance troupe to promote, foster and advance appreciation of Japanese, French and European culture;
to expose the public to Japanese Butoh Dance and newer contemporary forms of Butoh dance, to stimulate, encourage and promote public interest in theatrical productions and all related Art forms;
to bring foreign instructors to New York to educate the Public, to advance the appreciation of Theater and related Arts by means of the presentation of Theatrical performances, recitals, exhibitions and other events;
to promote and enhance the cultural enrichment of the general public of the New York County area through the active presentation of a diversity of theater forms;
to produce, distribute and otherwise disseminate information concerning theatrical events of all kinds;
to utilize dance and other means of artistic expression to heal the community, to offer free and low cost dance classes and workshops to disadvantaged segments of the population.




ABOUT VANGELINE:


Vangeline is a Butoh artist and the Artistic Director of The Vangeline Theater. She was born in France and moved to New York in June 1993. She founded The Vangeline Theater in December 2002 and has been training extensively with Master teachers Diego Pinon of the Butoh ritual Mexicano Center and Tetsuro Fukuhara, Daisuke Yoshimoto, Katsura Kan, Yumiko Yoshioka, Ko Murobushi, Yoshito Ohno from Japan. She has been teaching Butoh classes to dancers and non dancers in the New York Area since 2002.

The Vangeline Theater organizes intensive Butoh workshops in New York with Master Teachers. More recently we have been teaching members of the incarcerated population (the Dream a dream project).

Teaching credits include:

Robert Wagner School of the Arts, STAC at Herricks High School, New York University, the Jewish Community Center, the Bikram Yoga center, Battery Dance, Brooklyn College, PS122, Links hall Chicago, Squid, Bayview Correctional facility, Blushing Poppy Productions.

The Vangeline Theater performs Butoh offerings in public places in New York to offer our energy to the city. We support other New York performers and curate mixed performances of danse, music, mixed media. We invite other artists and dancers/choreographers/composers to perform with us.



The Dance:
Trance of becoming.

The fact of the dance verifies the soul's lust for otherness.
As we wander through the visions of our many facets we but demonstrate our thirst for what lies beyond.

The Answer:

the wind blew across the water.
The world woke up.
